OHDSI Portugal
Background
OHDSI and OMOP have played a crucial role in standardizing healthcare data and enabling the generation of reliable Real-World Evidence. Their adoption has improved patient care and facilitated medical research on an unprecedented scale, with a growing global community committed to advancing healthcare through collaborative data science.
Portugal is at the forefront of this movement, and the formalization of the National OHDSI Node lays the foundation for a thriving community of Portuguese healthcare data partners and SMEs. This community aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration to discuss and address national healthcare challenges through real-world evidence. The Node will also serve as a gateway for international innovation, research partnerships, and knowledge sharing around OMOP-CDM.
Objectives
The Portuguese National Node will actively pursue the following initiatives:
Establish a Portuguese Research Network based on OMOP:
- Promote national and international research initiatives and observational studies
- Contribute to a nationally standardized database
- Promote a National Network involving the industry and academic institutions
Create and share deliverables:
- Best practices for data-driven healthcare research
- ETL processes
- Data Quality
- Vocabulary improvement and national/regional codes mapping (e.g. CHNM, ICD10, DRG)
- Define common administrative procedures to streamline research collaborations (DPO approval, Ethics Committee approval, etc)
Find a Portuguese OHDSI multi-stakeholder interest group:
- Involve local Portuguese stakeholders in the community, while actively working to expand the network of partners
- Provide technical and operational support to potential new data partners
- Promote regular meetings between the national and international communities to share knowledge and promote knowledge sharing
- Encourage members’ active engagement in OHDSI/EHDEN activities at the European level
- Coordinate and communicate with national policy institutions, regarding projects and expectations
- Disseminate the value of OMOP-CDM more widely by organizing events and activities for academia, healthcare organizations, regulatory bodies, and industry partners
Governance Model
The objective of the proposed governance model is to define the annual workplan and responsibilities of the Portuguese Data Node Members.
